I started Unbothered Anyway after I had yet another seizure—my fourth in a year.
And I was pissed.
Not just because I had another seizure, but because I realized how much time and energy I had been spending trying to do everything “right.”
I was constantly thinking about what the doctors said, what I should do, what I shouldn’t do, what might trigger a seizure, what was safe, what wasn’t safe. There was always this little angel and devil sitting on my shoulders asking, Is this okay? Is this not okay? Should I do this? Should I not?
And the truth was… who even knew?
I wasn’t sitting at home refusing to live my life. I still traveled. I went places. I did things. I lived.
But looking back, I was probably a little too cautious sometimes.
Okay, maybe more than a little. 😂
And all that worrying wasn’t preventing epilepsy from existing. It was just wasting my time, draining my energy, probably giving me wrinkles, and making me feel helpless.
After that fourth seizure, I was lying in bed and something clicked.
There is absolutely no reason for me to pity myself.
I travel.
I have a successful marriage.
I have a career I have spent practically my entire life working toward.
I go to the gym.
I try new foods. I go places. I experience things. I laugh. I love. I have a whole freaking life.
Yes, epilepsy changes things.
When I have a seizure, driving goes on hold. And that sucks. There are precautions I have to take and things I have to think about that other people might never have to consider.
But that’s life.
I can acknowledge that something sucks without letting it become the center of my entire existence.
I’m not incapable of living my life. Far from it.
And somewhere along the way, I realized I was spending way too much time worrying about what epilepsy might take from me instead of appreciating everything I still have.
That’s when my attitude changed.
I want to tell epilepsy to fuck off.
Not because I can pretend it doesn’t exist. It does. And not because I’m going to ignore my doctors or stop taking care of myself.
But because epilepsy does not get to own my life.
It doesn’t get to decide whether I’m happy. It doesn’t get to take away my adventures, my marriage, my career, my laughter, or the person I am.
This isn’t just about epilepsy.
It’s for anyone who has ever felt like a diagnosis, a setback, fear, or circumstances were starting to dictate how they were supposed to live.
I don’t want to live vicariously through somebody else’s life, and I don’t want you to either.
Make YOUR own life and live it.
Want to stay home? Stay home.
Want to travel? Go.
Want to try the restaurant? Try it.
Want to go to the concert? Go.
Want to hit the gym? Do it.
Whatever your version of a good life looks like, live it.
That’s what Unbothered Anyway is about.
GO. LOOK. LOVE. LIVE. SEIZE.
And most importantly…
Seize the goddamn day.
